Mentoring

The Guild Mentoring Scheme

The Guild of Glass Engravers runs a mentoring scheme by which members who would like some help with their engraving (whether technical advice or moral support) can be put in touch with an experienced engraver who is in a position to help.

Assistance can be for a limited period. For example, a member thinking of applying for assessment for Craft Membership or Associate Fellowship might benefit from the advice of a ‘mentor’ who has already gone through the process.

Assistance can be on a longer-term basis, which can be useful for overseas  members or those who don’t have access to a local branch.

How the mentoring happens and how often is at the discretion of the individual mentor. However, most offer either telephone or e-mail advice or both, while some are prepared to arrange for their ‘mentee’ to visit them. Sometimes the mentor will travel to the mentee’s home. The scheme depends on volunteers and the service is entirely free, but if a mentor is prepared to visit the mentee’s home, the mentee is encouraged to pay the mentor’s travelling expenses.

Any member can apply for a mentor. If you would like to do so, please contact the guild administrator. The availability of mentors varies so you will be advised if there is a waiting period.
